GRIEF HAS NO RULES
This is true.
Despite what loving friends and family may say, or what Google suggests, there are no rules. No standard time span for resolution. No set stages to work through.
What works is our relationship and the space for you to share, cry, feel angry, or just laugh and relax.
You can take your time to make sense of your loss and to decide on your next steps.
Bereavement can be about many things, such as:
Anticipatory grief – we feel we are heading towards some kind of cliff edge, or dreaded event. We might experience agitation, anxiety, depression, or a sense of hopelessness. This is more common than people realise and it’s always good to talk about issues and be supported through a difficult situation.
Death – after we lose someone we love we often feel a need to cope and yet ‘coping’ in itself can become a burden and sap our energy. Although we have to get through our day-to-day life we also need to acknowledge our sadness and let it out, in safe ways. Sometimes the best way to cope is to stop coping and get support. We can pause, share, take time to breathe and unravel the knot that sits heavy inside us.
Divorce – when a long term relationship ends our feelings can be deep and profound. Something has died and we can’t get it back and we have to face up to a new reality for ourselves. We may have new decisions to make, new skills to learn and have many questions to be answered. We can work through all of these things and we can live and love again.
Suicidal ideation – perhaps we are feeling drawn to the door that has always been closed and we are tempted to open it and pass through. Life may feel hard, there are no options left to us and our resilience has reduced. We have an answer to our problems and although it can feel a seductive one, it comes at a terrible price. Before you choose to walk through that door, get in touch and talk to me. It’s possible to keep the door shut, create new options and find joy again.
